Serge Belamant was born in the year 1953 in Tulle, France to a father who was a highly qualified worker in Construction Company as a tiler. When Serge was 14 years of age, his family moved to South Africa, and he, therefore, needed to learn how to read and write in English. He later enrolled in Highlands North Boys’ High School located in Johannesburg. Since he was a bright student, Serge Belamant engaged himself in different activities, whereby he turned out to be excellent in rugby. He became the house captain for the science and bridge clubs at his school from 1970. Serge Belamant excelled in chess, and he got a chance to represent Southern Transvaal many times and finished sixth place in the South African Chess School Championships in 1972.
Serge later joined the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and was studying engineering for the first year. He later switched to computer science and applied mathematics in the second year. Serge Belamant later transferred to the University of South Africa (UNISA) whereby he studied information systems, but unfortunately, he never completed his degree.
At 22 years old, Belamant got his first job at Matrix which was a large civil engineering company. He started by working in the BKSH division in the company, handling element analysis software in IBM computers then later proceeded to Cyber computers. He developed applications that would examine water levels in dams in the whole of RSA to help prevent future droughts. Siege Belamant also managed to develop complex computer models at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He ended up being the person in charge of the computer section for Witwatersrand, Pretoria and Vereeniging road planning project.
Belamant later joined Control Data as the Head analyst in their ESKOM division whereby he came up with the first financial system that was scientifically based. Amongst the many organization Belamant worked with, was SASWITCH whereby his technological breakthrough led to it becoming the largest ATM switch in the world. Serge was a very handful in the making of blockchain applications by using smart cards. He was named the analyst of the year in the years 1980 and also 1982 when he was working at Control Data on a Cybernet application help team.
